The Incident

While on a short leisure trip to Kani Island in the Maldives, a Hong Kong Airlines flight attendant encountered a near-drowning accident in the hotel’s swimming pool. Though snorkeling training had not yet begun, he was found unconscious and pulled from the pool by lifeguards. On-site resuscitation was performed immediately, and the patient was transferred via rescue boat and ambulance to a hospital on Malé Island. Despite several episodes of cardiac and respiratory arrest, local doctors were able to restore vital signs. However, the patient remained in a coma due to prolonged cerebral hypoxia.

Coordination and Planning

Following the incident, TKP Medical Assistance was commissioned by a Hong Kong insurance company to assess the case and coordinate the medical evacuation. Given the Maldives’ unique geography, TKP designed a customized transport plan combining medical boat transit and long-range air ambulance service. The team carefully evaluated the patient’s stability for flight, planned critical care support during transfer, and prepared for rapid ICU admission upon arrival.

Safe Return to Hong Kong

After nearly seven hours of flight, the medical charter landed safely at Hong Kong International Airport. Under constant monitoring by TKP’s transport medical team, the patient was transferred without delay to a local hospital in Hong Kong for further intensive care. The operation showcased TKP’s ability to execute time-sensitive, cross-border evacuations in complex environments, ensuring the patient received life-sustaining support throughout the journey.
